O: In our presentation we are going to talk about American culture, how it’s portrayed in the media, as well as the pros and cons of Americanization.

Due to the vast amount of immigrants american culture has been influenced from many regions around the world.
O: These aspects include a countries language, food, religion, style, arts , and sports
S: Language is a very key component of culture as it represents how the population speaks, the United states does not have an official language, although 31/50 states have declared english as their official language.
S: In addition more than 90% of the US population speaks english , and that is the language most business is conducted in. Spanish, Chinese, French, German, are among the frequently spoken non english languages.
O: American cuisine has been influenced by european settlers and aboriginal peoples in early history. In todays day and age, there are many foods that are considered “ staple american foods” these include; hamburgers, hot dogs, potato chips, and macaroni and cheese. There are also styles of cooking that are specific to a region in the country, for example southern style cooking , or tex mex in texas, which is a blend of spanish and mexican cooking styles.
S: One of the key determining factors of a culture is its religion. The united states is amongst the most culturally diverse in the world and encompasses all religions. 73% of identifies themselves as christian, 1.4% are Jewish, 0.8% are muslim 3.8% other, and 21% are non religious ( Atheist or agnostic)
O: American style is usually considered casual and is widely influenced by celebrities (such as Kim kardashian and Kate Upton, the person in the photo). some notable American designers are Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein, Michael Kors and Victoria Secret. American style is also influenced by European designers such as Louis Vuitton and Gucci.
S: The united states is widely known around the world as a leader in mass media production, including tv and movies. The television broadcasting industry boomed in the 1950’s and now American television programs are shown around the world. Furthermore their movie industry is highly regarded, centered in hollywood, california American movies are popular worldwide.
Other forms of art include New york , and how it is the home of broadway, this shows Americas rich theatrical history
American Folk art is an artistic style and is shown through the works of quilts, and hand crafted items.
American music is also very diverse with tons of styles including blues, jazz, gospel, country, rock n’ roll, as well as hip hop.
O: America is a very sports minded country, it contains millions of fans who follow football, baseball, and hockey around the world. It attracts international attention through its professional sports. Baseball has long been considered Americas favourite sport but , it is being overcome by football now.
O: Americanization is the influence the United States has on the culture of other countries, such as their popular culture, cuisine, technology, business practices, or political techniques.

O: Did you know that over 70 million people in 100 countries eat mcdonalds every day?
The movie Forrest Gump made 350 million dollars at the international box office
According to a 2010 survey, 1.2 billion servings of coke are sold per day.
According to Forbes magazine, apple sold its 500 millionth iphone on March 25th, 2014.
S: pursuit of happyness movie- embodies the american dream of how someone can start with nothing and become rich through hard work. In the movie, the main character, Christopher Gardner, becomes homeless due to not having a stable job and having a lot of bills to pay, but becomes rich after working tirelessly and becoming a stockbroker.
O: family guy - “typical” american family with a stay at home mom and a husband who is the breadwinner. Have kids, house, and a car. Peter has an average paying job, which further evidences the fact that they are an average american family.
s: Americans also portray their people as being very patriotic and willing to fight for their country, this is shown in the movie “Saving Private Ryan” as well as various other war movies with brave American heroes. In addition, the American Media talks a lot about american soldiers in Iraq and other countries and how they are very brave.
O: This brings us to our next discussion topic , which is the pros of Americanization; Now that you know what it is, what do you guys think are some pros of americanization?
Some pros include how the american dream is still strong in their culture, and how one should always aspire to do better
It connects people through the mass social medias that are readily available, ability to communicate with people from around the globe.
America has a strong set of human rights value, and that is a good law to reflect onto other cultures.
There are also a number of economic advantages, which include being exposed to certain ideas that can improve lives, like high level technology and mass media production.
There are also many cons associated with Americanization:
S: melting pot effect, people and other cultures are beginning to lose what makes them unique and assimilating to American culture
S:doesn’t allow for the growth and prosperity of other cultures. americans usually try to support their cultures and ideals while sometimes ignoring the culture and cultural ideas of other nations.
The United states wants to be that political superpower that nobody is stronger then, hence why they put so much funding into military expenditure, and foreign military bases.
O: Many biases associated with women which include ; driving, cooking, not being as good at sports.
S: A lot of the time women have to live up to the beauty standards of set by models, celebrities and beauty magazines.
O: Many music videos and advertisements show women dressing in a very provocative way and support the idea of girls showing off their sexuality in the form of low cut skirts and short-shorts.
S: There are only male professional sports played on TV such as the NBA, MLS, MLB , NHL. In addition advertisements, usually show males playing these sports which supports the idea that men are better at sports.
Another important topic we are going to shed light on is african americans in the media
O: -involved in the drug trade
- favourite foods are watermelon and fried chicken
- black women are not financially independent
- are only good at professional sports 75% of NBA and 65% of NFL players are black
- Are generally unintelligent

-56% are being physically violent
-55% are lacking self control
O: Lawrence grossman, the former president of CBS news and PBS said that “ TV newscasts disproportionately show african Americans under arrest, living in slums, on welfare, and in need of help from the community”
S: Immigrants have helped change american culture due to the fact that they bring new cultural and religious beliefs, cuisine, and information that has changed the way many Americans view many topics.
O: Increased use of technology and technological devices has changed and influenced american culture. Families have less family time (ask class how many eat together at home) and increased use of technology has arguably decreased our generations social skills (texting at a restaurants instead of talking is commonplace). Moreover, People also have a wealth of knowledge at their fingertips (information age) and are able to instantaneously find a large amount of information on virtually any subject. This has lead to awareness and increased understanding of many social issues.
S: social media has increased the influence of celebrities. This is in largely due to platforms like instagram, twitter, and facebook have allowing millions of people to see what they’re doing and when they’re doing it. In addition, celebrities are able to easily express their opinion to millions of people through a post. These opinions can influence people and bring light to important topics.
O: In conclusion, American culture is very prevalent in our society here in Canada even though we follow our own separate culture. Whether it be their sports that we watch, clothes that we wear, or music we listen to, it all has an impact on our lifestyles and the way we go about our lives on a day to day basis.
